Beautiful Pea Green Boat- Still Life CD

Today’s post features a collection by UK ethereal/post-punk band Beautiful Pea Green Boat, released on CD in 1989. Taking their name from The Owl and the Pussycat, a classic children’s poem written by Edward Lear, the outfit were primarily a two piece, consisting of Ian Williams and Heather Wright. The band released a handful of 12” and two full length recordings in the mid-1980s, splitting at the turn of the decade. Their material is often downtempo, melodic, and moody, with several repetitive synths grounding the material with an electronic/darkwave edge.

This collection is comprised of the band’s best moments from their two prior LPs (1987’s Obsessions and 1988’s Get Religion). Perhaps I’ll upload them too, should anyone be interested. Otherwise, here’s the info for the compilation:

  1. I have Obsessions and still listen to it with enjoyment. Definitely has a character all its own.

If you do get around to ripping the previous BPGB albums I'd certainly like to hear them, if only because the versions on Still Life are often quite different from those on the LPs. Some of the songs are a bit poppier and dancier than the originals, so some of your readers might enjoy hearing the contrast.

  4. This has long been one of my favorite albums; I'm glad to see it shared! Have you heard Heather Wright's other band she was in at the same time, God Said? I'll probably rip their album soon…

  5. I'd like to hear the other lp's too…I have one track by BPGB on a compilation of stuff I taped off the John Peel show in the '80's…The Factory's 'Path Through The Forest' is on it too…also Mazzy Star among others…it had a loosely psychedelic theme…great stuff!

in good news, you kids can find Obsessions and a 12'' single uploaded together on this blog: http://funderglass.blogspot.com/2008/05/beautiful-pea-green-boat-obsessions.html

waiting on a vinyl copy of Get Religion before uploading. stay tuned!

  8. I came across this album a while back and absolutely love it. I had no idea there was more material… if you have a chance, I'd be ever grateful if you could post the complete previous releases. Thanks!

  9. Cheers for this post as this cd contains all the 'Get Religion' tracks – an album I loved back in the day. They should have made a bigger impact on the late 80s scene but regretfully didn't.
