Terminal Beach- Love on Auto 7”

Here’s a killer 7” from 1982 that I’ve been meaning to post for a while. Seems there isn’t a lot of information to be had regarding this understated minimal synth/post-punk hybrid single, a private release on T.B. records. The band hailed from the UK, and naturally, this is their only release.

If anyone can fill in the blanks on this one, feel free to chime in. Otherwise, please do enjoy!

  1. The B-side of this is so hauntingly beautiful. A favorite!

I remember hearing this one on a radio show years ago and not being able to track it down. Thanks!

  3. oldskool Says:

Agreed. This is beautiful stuff. Thank you!

  4. Great! Many heard influences on this track. Another ilfeunntial elektropunkgoth band from the 80s was Kommunity FK. They used a Prophet 5 during their recording of their debut lp, “The Vision & The Voice”, circa 1983. They also used it live in performance.

  5. The title track originates from a classic J.G. Ballard short story. Great story.

oddly enough, this is my dad. The singer in the middle of the pic. I only just found out this existed

Very cool, Laura! Tell your dad I love this single and so do a lot of folks out there! If he has any more copies I would love to buy one from him!

He posted below…unfortunately he doesn’t have any copies anymore. I’m trying to track some down. And hunt through the loft where I found the cover!

This was recordedbin a back garden 4 track studio, when we went back to mix it the next day the tapes had been accidentally wiped. We rerecorded it using some old instruments that were lying around ( we hadn’t taken ours) did it in an hour. Synth is a wasp. A ribbon synth, like an overgrown stylophone. Forgot all about it till my daughter found a wrinkled cover in the loft!

    • Frankie Teardrop Says:

Sad to hear about the tapes! But really glad to hear more about the experience. I love those wasp synths. Thank you for making a great piece of music, even if it’s just a wrinkle in the attic. We all love it and appreciate it!

I was the Drummer in Terminal Beach & I’d forgotten about the tape wiping episode until now. I used the studio kit, which was a hit knackered as i recall. To get that Timbale sound which overlays Love on Auto, we turned the snare off & raised the mikes about 3 feet over the kit. It sounded pretty awesome at the time……….just dated now 🙂
I have a couple of copies of the single but I will hang onto them.

    • Frankie Teardrop Says:

Really nice to hear from you too, Peter! It’s great to hear more about the band as there was little out there but a lot of love for these songs. An interesting technique on the drums- I love the minimal sound.

Right you are to hang on to your copies, but perhaps you guys could consider a reissue of the 7” in some capacity? The tapes may be gone, but vinyl sourcing from a great sounding/mint copy has worked before in the right hands.

If you guys are interested, I can put you in touch with some folks who might be able to lend a hand :).

    • Hi Pete, how are you doing. Still playing?
