{"id":2141,"date":"2013-11-13T13:59:21","date_gmt":"2013-11-13T13:59:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.systemsofromance.com\/blog\/?p=2141"},"modified":"2024-02-14T20:25:31","modified_gmt":"2024-02-14T20:25:31","slug":"here-today-whistle-in-the-yard-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.systemsofromance.com\/blog\/2013\/11\/here-today-whistle-in-the-yard-12\/","title":{"rendered":"Here Today- Whistle In the Yard 12&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve always had a soft spot for the self-titled Vigil record, which I first heard via <a href=\"www.hifihillary.com\/\u200e\">Hi-Fi Hillary<\/a>. \u00a0The album has made the <a href=\"http:\/\/burlveneer.typepad.com\/blog\/2007\/12\/homegrown-gothic-vigil.html\">blog<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/funderglass.blogspot.com\/2009\/02\/vigil-flac.html\">circuits<\/a> before, and is notorious for being the first rock album to have been recorded and mixed digitally. \u00a0It was released on Chrysalis records in 1987, and while a vinyl pressing of the LP and the <em>I Am Waiting<\/em> 12&#8221; can be easily found for a few bucks (I have bought\/passed out several copies among friends and DJs in the scene), the CD is much more scarce, fetching between $40-60 bucks whenever it pops up. \u00a0The album is a hybrid of catchy new wave hooks and post-punk guitars, a bit of grit beneath the gloss. \u00a0 I&#8217;ve always dug it.<\/p>\n<p>However, before Vigil there was Here Today, who formed in Baltimore in 1983 (see also <a href=\"http:\/\/www.systemsofromance.com\/blog\/2012\/01\/baltimore-grab-bag-immortal-paradigm-12-mission-when-thunder-comes-lp\/\">The Mission, Immortal<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.systemsofromance.com\/blog\/2013\/08\/the-unknown-fall-lp\/\">The Unknown<\/a> for more flagship acts of Baltimore&#8217;s fertile post-punk scene). \u00a0They recorded just one 3-track 12&#8221; in 1983, before courting major label interest from CBS. \u00a0Without swapping band members, they changed their name to Vigil and began work on their debut record in 1984. \u00a0 However, the A&amp;R rep who signed the band departed CBS, and the band agreed to a buyout in order to sign with Chrysalis records. \u00a0This entire process took three years, and the band were soon dropped after contributing a song to the <em>Nightmare on Elm Street 4<\/em> soundtrack, but the title track of this 12&#8221; survived the test of time, with a re-recorded version appearing on the Vigil LP. \u00a0 The Here Today version of the track is leaner, meaner, and darker, and the two b-sides are exclusive to this release. \u00a0While &#8216;Whistle&#8217; is still the standout, the other tracks are enjoyable. \u00a0&#8220;In the Maze&#8221; is a slow, bass driven dirge that picks up mid-way through, while &#8220;Del Centro 86\/99&#8221; is a futuristic themed track that sounds like a hybrid of Devo and Bauhaus&#8217; more spastic tracks (&#8220;Kamikaze Dive&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Vigil recorded a second album after leaving Chrysalis, which was self-released on cassette in the late 1980s. \u00a0\u00a0There are plans to reissue the first Vigil album in 2014, so perhaps the second album and other assorted rarities will see the light of day. \u00a0You can find Vigil here on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/pages\/Vigil-Here-Today\/148080688544009?fref=ts\">Facebook<\/a>\u00a0for any future updates.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.systemsofromance.com\/blog\/2013\/11\/here-today-whistle-in-the-yard-12\/heretoday\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3035\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3035\" src=\"http:\/\/www.systemsofromance.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/heretoday-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.systemsofromance.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/heretoday-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.systemsofromance.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/heretoday-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.systemsofromance.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/heretoday.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here Today-\u00a0<em>Whistle In the Yard<\/em> 12&#8221;<br \/>\n1.
