Days of 29- Destination D-Day 12”

Posted in 12'', 1980s, new wave, scottish, synth, synthpop, uk with tags on July 10, 2012 by Frankie Teardrop

Here’s another one you may have seen before on a few blogs, but freshly ripped from my own mint copy, so feel free to make your own comparisons.  Days of 29 were a UK/Scotland based quartet with an interesting press sheet and a penchant for New Order-tinged synthpop.  Feel those Peter Hook bass lines on “Destination D-Day,” a track that not only invokes the likes of “Blue Monday” and “Everything’s Gone Green,” but also bears a kinship to Secession’s classic “Touch,” Ministry’s “Effigy (I’m Not A),” & Hohokam’s “Harlequin Tears” by way of a Marc Almond sound-alike on vox.  A pretty irrefutable set of touchstones, highly recommended for fans of that big club sound.  There are two other tracks on this 12”, though while nice, don’t hold a candle to the 7-minute main attraction, a must for all self-respecting dance floors everywhere.  Hint: those of you who have hit the Wierd party in the past few years have likely heard this one blasting regularly through the fog…

Message- Dernière Nuit 7”

Posted in 1980s, 1988, coldwave, french, message, post-punk on July 1, 2012 by Frankie Teardrop

Arguably the best French 7”, second only to Coldreams’ classic Morning Rain, previously exhumed here. Like Coldreams, this one has also been posted in the past, but never at the greatest sound quality, as the most rare of records are hard to find in mint condition. Strangely enough, the insert here claims that 2000 of these were pressed, but very few seem to own this one, so I wonder just how many survived the 80s.

This single was released in 1988 on Krezimikroïd, a very DIY French label responsible for some other very-hard-to-find releases. More Message appear on several classic coldwave compilatioms, including the original L’Appel De La Muse (legendary), and the Esom Elion Esmaris K7. Another track appears on the Phantasm Compilation Vol. 1, which is very hard to track down. If anyone out there has this tape, please don’t hesitate to drop a line. Otherwise, here’s a crystal clear rip of this coldwave masterpiece!

Nuvo West- Scary LP

Posted in 1980s, 1983, arizona, minimal, minimal synth, new wave, US with tags on June 26, 2012 by Frankie Teardrop

Here’s a rare and obscure minimal synth LP from Phoenix, Arizona, perfect for fans of Bugger West, Tone Set, Combined Minds, etc (the latter two who also hailed from Arizona). Varying degrees of DIY desert-synth magic here, my favorite track being the closing instrumental “Shades of Yesterday,” which almost feels like a synth version of Angelo Badalamenti’s Twin Peaks score… I do believe there’s a tape out there somewhere that precedes this LP, but no info about that one, sorry!

Thanks to Bx-59cppw for the donation!

Acute Logic- Moroccan Nights 7”

Posted in 1980, 1981, post-punk, synth, uk with tags on June 13, 2012 by Frankie Teardrop

As promised, here’s the lone 7” from the UK’s Acute Logic, previously featured on the last Systems of Romance comp. Very rare single from 1981 on Illogical Records, with very little info out there on the web. The band’s lineup was:

Pete Collins – Vocals & Guitar
Curt B – Keyboards
Brett Giddings – Bass
David S – Drums

This single took me a dog’s age to track down, and mine came without a picture sleeve and a little crackle.  Hey, I’ll take what I can get.  What YOU get however, is three incredible tracks that walk a fine line between Seventeen Seconds-era Cure and The Names. Pretty amazing touchstones… Don’t pass this one up!

Acute Logic- Moroccan Nights 7”
1. Moroccan Nights
2. The Obsession
3. Balcony

Bushido- The Sands of Nakajima & Deliverance LPs

Posted in Uncategorized on June 9, 2012 by Frankie Teardrop

Here are the two LPs from UK synth/experimental band Bushido, ripped freshly for your maximum listening pleasure. The project is the brainchild of Gary Levermore, who currently runs Nettwerk’s UK division and who also ran Third Mind records (Beautiful Pea Green Boat, Front Line Assembly, In the Nursery, Heavenly Bodies etc.) for a while. Other Third Mind artists have guested as well, including Chryss (Julia Niblock) from Attrition and Glenn Wallis of Whitehouse / Konstruktivist.

Two fantastic listens here, both which walk a fine line between ritualistic experimentation and skewed synthpop, often on the same track. Quite eclectic and engaging listens. The devil is in the details:

Bushido- The Sands Of Nakajima LP (1985)
1. Rain
2. If….
3. She Had To Say Yes
4. Johnny Fez’s South Mediterranean Blues (Moroccan Roll)
5. First Respects (For NS & BV)
6. Laugh, Clown, Laugh
7. Among The Ruins
8. False Prophets = False Profits (Concrete Mix)
9. San Sebastian
10. Black August – The Rape Of Honour
11. Calm

Bushido- Deliverance LP
1. A Question Of Identity
2. Lament
3. Intrigue
4. An Imperial Affair
5. High Rise

Various Artists- Systems of Romance vol. 666

Posted in systems of romance, various artists on May 26, 2012 by Frankie Teardrop

This was originally slated to be the final post for Systems of Romance after all the drama and fallout of Mediafire, but I put this comp. on hold once the new regime kicked into action. Figured now’s as good a time as any to let this new comp hit your drives as a thanks for all the support over the past few months of change and growth.

Given this comp’s original intention of closing the doors on this blog, there’s a lot of emotional connection and homage to many of Systems of Romance’s past posts, including demos and rarities by some of my favorite artists to be featured here, including Weimar Gesang, John Costello, Ultime Possibilité, Opéra De Nuit, etc. There’s also a few exclusive goodies and standout tracks in the mix. A lot of guitars this time around, with a few minimal synth and wave goodies thrown in for good measure. Definitely a treasure trove of sounds that should feel right at home for fans of the blog.

Various Artists- Systems of Romance vol. 666
1. Victory- Vietnam
2. Silent Way- Dark Mine Fields
3. Love Lasts Forever- Babel 17
4. Ball Into Three Particles- Ashrae Fax

6. Your Return- Royal Depeche
7. No More Lies (Alt. Version)- Ultime Possibilité

As with the last installment, here’s a track by track analysis:

1. The title track from this band’s eponymous 12”. Very difficult to obtain post-punk from New Zealand, donated by a friend.
2. Soaring Japanese darkwave in the vein of Excentrique Noiz and Diastereomer. I’d love to hear the rest of this if anyone owns it!
3. A demo recording, as well as a cover of a classic Virgin Prunes song. This particular version is different than the one that appears on the Infrastition reissue of Celeano Fragments.
4. One of my favorite “modern” shoegaze/dreampop artists. The band is now defunct, but their 2003 record Static Crash! is an all time favorite, recently pressed to vinyl.  This track was released a year earlier on the Botox Boon cd-r.
5. An alternate 7” version of this classic track from these Czechoslovakian favorites! This one precedes the LP version originally posted here.  The b-side to this killer single can be found on a previous Crispy Nuggets compilation as well!
6. The b-side from a privately released German 7” from 1987.
7. An alternate version of the b-side originally posted here.  This version is a bit more atmospheric, with vocals seated deeply into the mix.
8. A demo passed on to me by a fan, likely from the band’s formative years.  Another piece to the puzzle.  Get the rest of their amazing discography here– I’ve also since acquired and re-ripped the Sourire de L’Ombre 12” at pristine quality so be sure to revisit these great records!
9. A brand new contribution from John Costello, a great friend and frequent guest on Systems of Romance.  This is a cover of the classic Testcard F track, which originally was recorded on a peel session.  Get the original here and get to know John on his facebook page!
10. Phil/Goutroy from A Viable Commercial turned me on to these guys, who released one 12” in 1985 (though the track was recorded in 1983).  I like the a-side ok, but feel the b-side is the stronger track, very reminiscent of Inxs and Flock of Seagulls.  Don’t resist it.
11. An amazing minimal synth from Sweden, donated by a member of the band. They recorded several tracks and a 7”, but changed their name to Pal & Roger before issuing.  Feel those grooves!
12. Incredibly rare track from the UK, 1981 also featured on the excellent Fade2Grey site.  Shows some definite Cure/Three Imaginary Boys worship.  I just picked up a copy of this 7”, making the inclusion of this track a little redundant (stay tuned for a full rip once the postman delivers), but keeping in the spirit of things, you guys get to enjoy it a bit early.
13. Early demo from this coldwave staple, previously unreleased.
14. Originally posted by the great Return to the East blog, ripped from a fresh copy of the 7”.  I like the other tracks, but this is one of my all-time favorite cold offerings, complete contrast from the indie pop band they would become and more in line with the Lively Art greats.
15. An alternate version of this classic Italian track, released on the F/Ear This compilation.  Get the rest of their discograhy here.
16. Awesome minimal synth from 1983.  Don’t know much more about this one.
17. My favorite track from this elusive cult band from the UK.  This track was originally released on the Trance Compilation K7.  You can read more about the band and Gayna Perry here.  Grab their full lengths here and here.
18. Incredible cold track from the UK, plucked from a split 7” on Newton Products (the a-side by Beat Necessity is also essential).  This one comes from my own personal copy, though you may have seen this one on Return to the East as well.  A staple in my Wierd DJ sets, and a great way to end things on a high note.  Hello today, gone tomorrow.

Art Remains Tangible- A.R.T. K7

Posted in Uncategorized on May 19, 2012 by Frankie Teardrop

A very generous reader donation with kind permission from V.I.S.A., the label responsible for this excellent cassette, among many other classic releases. You can read more about the label and check a more detailed catalog listing here!

Art Remains Tangible, aka A.R.T. were a minimal synth/coldwave hybrid project from France, consisting of four members, all of which go by their first names on this release. This 1984 cassette is their only full release, though astute readers may recall a live appearance on the Unreleased Vol. 1 cassette and a few tracks on the excellent Ritual Dos Sádicos compilation, posted by our dear friend Avicus. He mentions there that only 50 copies of this tape exist!

Fru Aut- Fru Aut LP

Posted in 1980s, 1988, coldwave, goth, goth-rock, italian, post-punk on May 14, 2012 by Frankie Teardrop

This is one of the best LPs I’ve heard in some time, donated by the great bx-59cppw, who posted their 12” in the past as well.  Incredible post-punk from 1988, complete with cold synths, moody melodies, and bleating sax.  Comes off like a darker, female fronted version of Sad Lovers and Giants, if touchstones are necessary.   Others include Look Back In Anger, Xmal, Euroshima, etc.

These guys (or rather, guys and one gal) were Italian, and released another eponymous cassette and the A Sangue Freddo CD release on top of the two vinyl releases.

Fru Aut- Fru Aut LP

2. La TV Sensuale

4. Bla Bla – Discorso Alla Finestra

Batz Without Flesh- No Memory LP

Posted in 1980s, 1990s, 1991, ebm, electro, industrial, synth with tags on May 13, 2012 by Frankie Teardrop

Here’s one I see around every now and then, but I’m surprised hasn’t been posted yet.  Here we have a LP from EBM/electro band Batz Without Flesh, released in 1991.  This is their third release, their last on vinyl.  The first two (A Million Bricks and their debut self-titled EP) are worth hearing as well, and were pressed to CD in 1994.

Pretty rough pressing here so I’ve gotten the best sound possible out of my personal copy.  There’s another rip floating around that has similar flaws, so my guess is that most of the copies sound like this (recycled vinyl?).  There’s just a little noise during the quiet bits, not that there are many on this LP.  Classic industrial/ebm in the vein of Klinik, Advanced Art, Data-Bank-A, etc.  The album kicks off with its best moment, the dancefloor ready “Repunish,” which is worth the price of admission alone.  “Electro Slut” is another clear winner.

Batz Without Flesh- No Memory LP
1. Repunish
2. Splinter
3. Priviledge To Kill
4. Single Stare
5. The Notion
6. Fenpor
7. Electro Slut
8. Can’t Speak
9. Bite It
10. Equinox
