Outer Circle- My Mona Lisa 12”

Posted in 1980s, 1984, minimal, minimal synth, new wave, nth, outer circle, post-punk, US on February 2, 2010 by Frankie Teardrop

This particular post comes as a generous donation from band member Brad Bechtel, and features the follow up 12” from Outer Circle, released in 1984. At this point in time, guitarist Cole Coonce joined the band’s lineup, solidifying the band as a six piece. The remaining band members, being Steve Spingola (vocals), Pat Collison (synth), Paul Santos (bass), Lee Howell (drums), and of course Bechtel on lap steel guitar are still intact, returning with more of their distinctive edge.

The 12” features three original tracks and two remixes of “My Mona Lisa,” as done by Gary Otto. Here’s the details:

Outer Circle- My Mona Lisa 12”
1. My Mona Lisa
2. Building Dreams
3. Warm Gun
4. My Mona Lisa (Gary Otto Mix)
5. My Mona Lisa (Instrumental)

Orchestre Rouge- Yellow Laugher LP + Soon Come Violence 7”

Posted in 1980s, 1982, coldwave, end of data, french, martin hannett, Orchestre Rouge, passion fodder, post-punk, tanit on February 2, 2010 by Frankie Teardrop

I was just reminded about this killer album through a video posting on ye ol’ Facebook, perpetual time waster and otherwise social networking site. With that in mind, I’ve uploaded a killer full length by French coldwave band Orchestre Rouge. Attached is their debut record, 1982’s Yellow Laughter, a particularly driving guitar record released on RCA. The record was lovingly produced by Martin Hannett, famed producer for Joy Divison, Blue In Heaven, and a slew of other Factory Records bands.

As for membership, the band was a five piece, featuring Pascal Normal, who worked with both Tanit and End of Data after Orchestre Rouge’s disbandment. Théo Hakola and Denis Goulag went on to form Passion Fodder, taking their name from Orchestre Rouge’s second LP. As a quick aside, Passion Fodder also featured bassist Pascal Humbert, formerly of Tanit, now known for his work in both 16 Horsepower and Wovenhand. Pretty small world!

Anyway, I’ve also included the the 7” of “Soon Come Violence,” the band’s first single, featuring an exclusive b-side. Without any further ado, here’s the information:

Orchestre Rouge- Yellow Laughter LP
1. Soon Come Violence
2. Je Cherche Une Drogue (Qui Ne Fait Pas Mal)
3. Soft Kiss
4. Red Orange Blue
5. Hole In His Thigh
6. The Consul
7. Speakerine
8. Slugs
9. Crows

Orchestre Rouge- Soon Come Violence 7”

Calculated X- Four Windows 12”

Posted in 1980s, 1982, american, Calculated X, darkwave, minimal synth, new wave, post-punk, US on January 23, 2010 by Frankie Teardrop

Not much is known about Calculated X, aside from their American (Tennessee) origins, and contributions by the late Bobby Bowie (no relation to David, I’m afraid). That said, this particular 12”, released in 1982, is one of the very best dark synth records of all time. All three tracks are pure class, especially the driving “Dream Affair,” one of my favorite tracks to spin here in New York.

It seems as if the band has also released a full length record, but I can’t seem to find much information on it. That all said, if anyone’s able to fill in the gaps and tell more of the Calculated X story, feel free. Otherwise, here’s the info for this killer 12”.

Calculated X- Four Windows 12”
1. Four Windows
2. Girl Like You

Belfegore- A Dog is Born LP

Posted in 1980s, 1983, Belfegore, german, NDW, new wave, post-punk, synth on January 23, 2010 by Frankie Teardrop

Here’s a classic German post-punk record, one of the highlights of the NDW movement that swept the country throughout the 1980s. Combing dark synths, aggressive guitars, experimental tendencies, and deep grooves, this record has it all.

Formed in 1982, the members of Belfegore had their roots in equally stellar projects, including Nichts and Die Krupps. This record was the first of two released by the band. Their second record, released on Elektra, earned a bit more attention and exposure, while this first record was self funded and released by local independent label Pure Freude, also responsible for S.Y.P.H. and a handful of Mekons releases. Their second (self-titled) record also featured the hit “All That I Wanted,” which earned sporadic airplay on MTv and VH1.

The band opened up for U2’s Unforgettable Fire European tour in 1985, shifting members and splitting up soon after. Vocalist Meikel Clauss would leave the music business entirely, practicing medicine.

Here’s the information for the band’s debut record, released in 1983.

Belfegore- A Dog Is Born LP
1. Mensch Oder Gott
2. Glashaus
3. Herz Atmet Echos
4. Deutsche Mark´n Bein
5. Ridiculous
6. A Dog Is Born
7. WOW!

Ziyo- Ziyo LP

Posted in 1980s, 1989, 1990s, 200s, coldwave, polish, post-punk, Ziyo on January 22, 2010 by Frankie Teardrop

Here’s a classic post-punk record, the first of many from Polish act Ziyo, who formed in 1984. Though it took five years for the band to release their debut, the wait was well worth it, as this s/t record is a quintessential slice of coldwave music from the Eastern Block.

Ziyo are still together to date, and just released their eighth studio record in 2009. As it stands, they are just as vital and powerful as Siekiera and De Press, two of their shorter-lived peers. Perhaps the key to the band’s longevity is their more eclectic sound? Either way, let’s get to the details.

Ziyo- Ziyo LP
1. Nr 1
2. Poza Tym Miejscem
3. Graffiti
4. Obwarowany
5. Idziemy Wytrwale
6. Panie Prezydencie
7. Pod Jednym Niebem
8. Nowe Krajobrazy

End of Data- Dans Votre Monde LP

Posted in 1980s, 1985, art-rock, coldwave, end of data, french, minimal, post-punk, synth, wave on December 12, 2009 by Frankie Teardrop

Next up, we have the second End of Data LP, finally rescued from poorly-ripped hell. The only copy most folks have of this record in digital format are ripped at a low bitrate from a less than stellar LP copy, so here’s a more crisp, solid copy. This second record is slightly more poppy and new wave-esque than their more abrasive and strange debut, available here, so feel free to compare and contrast, and read up on the band while you’re at it. Otherwise, here’s a more solid and consistent rip of this 1985 classic!

End of Data- Dans Votre Monde LP
1. Dans Votre Monde
2. Movie Drama
3. Quetzalcoatl
4. Symphonie
5. La Rive Asiatique
6. Atttrra (Vers Le Miroir)

Move- Move LP

Posted in 1986, goth-rock, italian, minimal, move, post-punk on December 8, 2009 by Frankie Teardrop

I’ve seen this one on several want lists across the blogosphere. Thanks to Pieter Schoolwerth of Wierd Records for originally lending me this one to rip for you all (though as of 1.2.13, I’ve come across my own copy and have re-ripped it for maximum enjoyment).  Very little information exists about this Italian post-punk/gothic band.  Their sound recalls early Christian Death with a few synth influences.  I was only familiar with “Cosa Domani,” a particularly excellent track that’s good for an aggressive dance floor.

Released in 1986, this is the band’s only proper full length release. Just a year later, however, the band released a split 12” with Gronge, which can be found via Kentucky Fried Wave.  There’s also a demo tape released shortly before this LP, which I’ve since found and uploaded here.

Move- Move LP
1. Any Move
2. Cosa Domani
3. Lei
4. Lo Scoglio
5. Still Smoking
6. When I’m With My Self
7. Quattro E Tre/Quarti

Sorry for the repetition lately, but here’s another Ecstasy post by request. Keeping in chronological order, here’s the band’s third album, released in 1988. All information about the band can be found in the previous two posts, so let’s get to the upload, shall we?

2. Only For You
3. Sleeping
4. Like Christ
5. Angelic
6. Jump And Fall
7. Ice
8. The Afterworld

Naturally, we’ve got some bonus tracks here. Tracks 5 and 6 hail from the Only For You 12”, while “Ice” seems to be exclusive to this release, at least according to the band’s discogs listing. If anyone knows for sure, let me know. Otherwise, enjoy- and expect some more goodies to follow in the next few weeks.

Edit: I am currently in the process of updating all the divshare links from the first year of the blog, since I’ve heard that download limits are often exceeded. Kas Product should be live by the end of the afternoon, and the rest will follow as I have time. I also have a few zshare reuploads to handle, so stay tuned for that.

The Essence- A Monument of Trust CD

Posted in 1987, coldwave, netherlands, new wave, post-punk, sad lovers and giants, snake corps, The Essence on November 18, 2009 by Frankie Teardrop

Real quick post today, folks, but here’s the second Essence record, released in 1987 via Midnight Music. The band were still a three piece at this point in time, featuring the same lineup as their debut, so the sound doesn’t stray too far. I do happen to prefer this record to Purity though, by a hair!

Otherwise, this particular upload contains two bonus tracks plucked from the A Mirage 12” (the extended mix and “Lollipop”), as well as “The Happiness” another b-side from the This Cat 12”. Perhaps the band couldn’t fit these tracks on one LP record, but it’s nice to have them in a cleaner format, for sure! On that note, here’s the information for the record. Enjoy!

The Essence- A Monument of Trust CD
1. A Mirage
2. Drifting
3. In Tears
4. Nothing…
5. The Waves of Death
6. The Happiness
7. Lollipop
8. Years of Doubt
9. Fire
10. The Death Cell
11. A Monument of Trust

The Essence- Purity CD

Posted in 1985, coldwave, netherlands, new wave, post-punk, sad lovers and giants, snake corps, The Essence on November 17, 2009 by Frankie Teardrop

I’ve got a pair of early Essence records to upload for you folks. Here’s the first of the lot, the band’s 1985 debut, Purity. The band originally formed as a three piece in 1984, hailing from Rotterdam, a region in the Netherlands. Over the course of time, the band grew in both popularity and personnel, releasing four full length LPs and several 12” singles before their demise in the mid-nineties. Most of the band’s material was released on Midnight Music, the label who also were responsible for Sad Lovers and Giants and The Snake Corps, two of the band’s closest sonic peers.

Speaking of which, it’s difficult to avoid comparing The Essence to The Cure, as the band walk similar sonic territory, straight down to the melodies, lyrics, and even the chimes in the instrumentation. For those who can’t avoid the comparison, the touchstones are close enough to consider it a lost record from The Top/Head on the Door era! Otherwise, it’s a rather solid guitar record from the mid-80s, with a hint of gloom and doom thrown in for good measure.

A surprising fun fact about this record: It was recorded in Alaska, of all places! Perhaps it was the allure of the near darkness and hopes of bringing the state’s icy edge to the record. Did they succeed? You decide. Here’s the information below.

The Essence- Purity CD
1. The Last Preach
2. A Reflected Dream
3. The Cat
4. The Blind
5. Never Mine
6. Endless Lakes
7. Forever in Death
8. Salivation
9. The Waving Girl
10. Purity
11. Confusion*
12. From My Mouth**
13. The Swaying Wind**

*bonus track from The Cat 12”, 1986
**bonus track from Endless Lakes 12”, 1986
both bonus tracks included on the 1996 CD reissue of Purity.

Stay tuned for the band’s sophomore record, which I will be uploading shortly!
