Weimar Gesang- 12” Discography

Posted in 1980s, 1984, 1985, 1986, darkwave, italian, minimal synth, Weimar Gesang on June 30, 2009 by Frankie Teardrop

Though a few demo cassettes and live material are circling around in rather incomplete and poor quality, here’s the official recorded output of Italian darkwave/minimal synth band Weimar Gesang, which amounts to three 12” releases. There are also a handful of compilation appearances alongside the live/demo cassettes, but I’ve been unsuccessful in tracking them down as of yet.

Not a lot of information about the band to be found otherwise. The band consisted of four members: Donato Santarcangeli, Fabio Magistrali, Giuseppe Tonolini, and Paolo Mauri, a few of which went on to play in various other Italian bands over the years. If anyone has some concrete info about these fantastically gloomy fellows, feel free to contribute below.

That all said, here’s the information for there three 12” releases.  Recommended heavily for fans of the Cure/New Order/Victrola.  So many favorite songs here, including “Chantal’s Secret,” “Light-Tight Place,” and “Worn Out Prayer.”

Weimar Gesang- Even Stone Pales 12” (1984)

Weimar Gesang- The Colours Of Ice (1985)

EDIT: A comrade over at the Krupnik blog has featured the Afterglow compilation, which features three further Weimar Gesang traxx, none of which appear on these 12 inches! Click here to nab it.

Otherwise, as previously mentioned, I do have a really shoddy live recording from 1985 kicking around. I can’t really recommend it, but if anyone’s dying to hear it, shout below and I’ll upload it separately.

Störung- The Art of Combining Cassette

Posted in 1980s, 1983, minimal, minimal synth, netherlands, Störung on June 23, 2009 by Frankie Teardrop

Astute fans of minimal wave should already be familiar with Störung, a duo from the Netherlands who released one classic full length record in 1982 (get it here on Mutant Sounds). Their sound combines some of the most striking minimal electronics with dirty guitars, bass, and alternating male and female vocals.

The band formed in 1981, and during their lifespan released both the This is Future LP and the respective Dreadful Dance 7”. Though a recent archival release by Minimal Wave Records (currently available for a meager $8.50!) appeared two years ago, the band had only these releases under their belt, but still had several unrecorded tracks in their repertoire. An unofficial cassette was released by their label, Combinator, in 1983. The bootleg featured several Störung staples alongside a series of unreleased tracks, recorded during one of the band’s live sets. These are the only known versions of some of these tracks, and though the quality is a bit warm due to the nature of the release, it still holds up as an additional piece of the Störung puzzle.

Without any further ado, here’s the information for the release:

Störung- The Art of Combining Cassette
1. Empire SX
2. Nooduitgang 2
3. Modern Fetch
4. Drums Keep Thundering
5. Europe Calls
6. Radio Lines

10. Don’t Want To Know
11. Warschau Pact

Here’s a rare cassette release by a band from the Netherlands called Das Ding, one of many in a line of fantastic European minimal synth bands. Not a ton of information to be gathered about these guys, but the cassette is one of three releases, their first appearing in 1982 and the final in 1985. Not sure when this one hails from, but if anyone in the peanut gallery knows, feel free to chime in. Otherwise, here’s the information proper:

Doppler Effect- Hard At Work 12”

Posted in 1980s, 1988, american, doppler effect, minimal synth on May 26, 2009 by Frankie Teardrop

Here’s the first of two short posts for the day. Uploaded below, we have the lone 12” by minimal wave/synthpop band Doppler Effect. As there were two bands who went by this name as early as the 1980s, there’s little information to be found on this particular act, but I do believe they’re a four/five piece American band, at the very least. Otherwise, this particular 12” features three hi-energy wave tracks, essential for any aspiring DJ. The final track on the 12”, “Four Day Romance” has been compiled and included among several classic minimal wave gems. Meanwhile, the band seems to have contributed two stand-alone tracks on the 1984 compilation Hit the Floor but the jury’s still out about the origin of these tracks.

If anyone has any further information about this band or the above noted release, feel free to drop a note. Otherwise, here’s the information for this particular 12”, released in 1988.

1. Hard At Work
2. I Don’t Wanna Be Your Man
3. Four Day Romance

I received an email from Michael James Straight of Doppler Effect, who not only told me about the newly uploaded Doppler Effect collection on iTunes, but also filled in some of the blank spaces about the band. Here’s what he had to say:

A little backstory, We ended up having issues with another band called The Doppler Effect which were a garage rock band, they stole our artwork and a few other things to confuse the market so we decided to change our name to Workforce. The line-up of the band changed over the years as well. Workforce is in the process of working on Soundtrack music but have been back in the studio to work up an new electro project that we hope to release in the fall

The iTunes collection also features a handful of bonus tracks- including demos, remixes, and a bonus track from the above mentioned Hit the Floor compilation. Not to be missed! CLICK here to purchase Doppler Effect via iTunes!

Chris Carter- The Space Between Cassette

Posted in 1980, 1980s, ambient, chris + cosey, chris carter, industrial, minimal, minimal synth on April 28, 2009 by Frankie Teardrop

Today’s artist should need no introduction, as he’s a member of several pioneering electronic acts including the likes of Throbbing Gristle and Chris and Cosey/Carter Tutti. Though Chris Carter lent his skills primarily to these outfits, the English musician recorded several of his own more electronic and less abrasive pieces on the side.

This particular release, Carter’s first solo outing, consists of several synth/wave instrumental recordings made in the legendary Throbbing Gristle studio. Though it’s been re-released several times over (never on vinyl), The Space Between originally appeared in cassette form, with little information and no tracklisting. The original pressing was released on TG’s Industrial Records, while subsequent CD reissues appeared on Elektra and The Grey Area.

Without any further ado, here’s the information for the record, and the link for your perusal:

Velodrome- Au Velodrome 141 12”

Posted in 1980s, 1988, ebm, german, industrial, minimal synth, velodrome on April 8, 2009 by Frankie Teardrop

Pardon the double post, ladies and gents, but here’s a rather solid 12” by German EBM act Velodrome. Though this is their only release, each member of the duo had been previously active in other similar bands. Previous to Velodrome, Jorge Guber played in both Lineas Aereas and Metropakt while vocalist Krishna Goineau was a member of the famous Liaisons Dangereuses, who resumed activity soon after this 12” release.

Without any further ado, here’s the information for their lone 12”, released in 1988.

Voice Farm- The World We Live In LP

Posted in 1980s, 1982, 1990s, minimal synth, san francisco, synthpunk, US, voice farm on March 14, 2009 by Frankie Teardrop

Fulfilling a quick Saturday morning request for Voice Farm’s The World We Live In LP, as the band was previously featured on the Oh Harry, You’re Such a Drag! compilation. As a quick aside, I’ve also posted a Radio Free Europe LP a ways back, for whomever asked.

Anyway, Voice Farm were primarily a two piece (but occasionally three or four piece) synthpunk band from San Francisco. Formed in 1981, the band earned a decent cult following over the years, eventually landing a spot opening up for Depeche Mode on their World Violation tour in 1990. They eventually split in 1995, but released four records before their demise. This first one, 1982’s The World We Live In, is significantly different than their last few, as the band persued a more pop-oriented sound in their latter-days, where as this debut is closer to the manic energy of synthpunk and the rampant electronic pulse of minimal synth. Curiously, the band would not release a follow up for another five years.

Here’s the info for their debut record.
