Fiction Technology- Mega/Phase EP

Posted in 1980s, 1986, Fiction Technology, minimal synth on October 7, 2009 by Frankie Teardrop

A friend of mine was recently requesting more from Fiction Technology, so I’ve uploaded their entire EP for everyone’s listening pleasure. Little is known about this particular minimal synth band, as this is their only release. No band credits, no info outside of its German label release in 1986. Coincidentally, it’s the same label who released the coveted Nine Circles disc, another coveted slice of minimal synth, but that’s all we’ve got. A shame, seeing as “In the City” is a perfect dance floor gem.

Does anyone out there in the ether have any more light to shed on this particular band or release? Feel free to drop a line. Otherwise, on to the music!

Days of Sorrow- 12” Discography

Posted in 1980s, 1984, 1986, days of sorrow, german, minimal synth, post-punk on July 3, 2009 by Frankie Teardrop

To celebrate our upcoming independence day, well…here’s something straight from the heart of Germany. In short, this is the complete discography of minimal synth/post-punk band Days of Sorrow.

According to sleeve information, the band featured a four piece lineup for their first 12”, changing drummers and expanding to a five piece for the second, which followed two years later. Not much else is known about the band outside of their origins, and their records fetch incredibly impressive prices, so let’s get straight to the nitty gritty, shall we? Here’s the information for their two 12” releases, zipped up for your minimal electronic pleasure.

Days of Sorrow- Remembering the Days 12” (1984, Tollhaus Records)
1. Wild World
2. War
3. Travel
4. Don’t Leave Me Drowning

Days of Sorrow- A Thousand Faces 12” (1986, Rough Trade Germany)
1. Wild World
2. A Thousand Faces (Night-Time)
3. Mysterious Eyes

*download link removed- pick up a reissue of both of these 12”s via Dead Wax Records!

There also exists a 1986-released 7” for Wild World, but I’m gathering it’s simply the A Thousand Faces recordings of both “Wild World” and “Mysterious Eyes,” minus the eponymous 12” track. I reckon the zip otherwise contains their complete discography. Enjoy!

Weimar Gesang- 12” Discography

Posted in 1980s, 1984, 1985, 1986, darkwave, italian, minimal synth, Weimar Gesang on June 30, 2009 by Frankie Teardrop

Though a few demo cassettes and live material are circling around in rather incomplete and poor quality, here’s the official recorded output of Italian darkwave/minimal synth band Weimar Gesang, which amounts to three 12” releases. There are also a handful of compilation appearances alongside the live/demo cassettes, but I’ve been unsuccessful in tracking them down as of yet.

Not a lot of information about the band to be found otherwise. The band consisted of four members: Donato Santarcangeli, Fabio Magistrali, Giuseppe Tonolini, and Paolo Mauri, a few of which went on to play in various other Italian bands over the years. If anyone has some concrete info about these fantastically gloomy fellows, feel free to contribute below.

That all said, here’s the information for there three 12” releases.  Recommended heavily for fans of the Cure/New Order/Victrola.  So many favorite songs here, including “Chantal’s Secret,” “Light-Tight Place,” and “Worn Out Prayer.”

Weimar Gesang- Even Stone Pales 12” (1984)
1. Held Inside
2. Annual Ring
3. Chantal’s Secret
4. Held Inside Again

Weimar Gesang- The Colours Of Ice (1985)
1. Deceit
2. Like In A Mirror
3. Melt Your Sight
4. One Promise Less
5. Torn Envelope

Weimar Gesang- No Given Path 12” (1986)
1. Du Bist
2. The Secret Us
3. Light – Tight Place
4. When The Moon Splits The Gloom
5. Worn Out Prayer
6. Mother Of Nothing

EDIT: A comrade over at the Krupnik blog has featured the Afterglow compilation, which features three further Weimar Gesang traxx, none of which appear on these 12 inches! Click here to nab it.

Otherwise, as previously mentioned, I do have a really shoddy live recording from 1985 kicking around. I can’t really recommend it, but if anyone’s dying to hear it, shout below and I’ll upload it separately.

Screams For Tina- Strobelight Funeral 12”

Posted in 1980s, 1986, 1990s, 2000s, deathrock, LA, los angeles, post-punk, reformed, screams for tina, US on April 23, 2009 by Frankie Teardrop

Here’s a horse of a different color compared to the usual sounds posted here as of late. Screams For Tina formed in Los Angeles in 1985, a twisted, dark post-punk band consisting of four like-minded members. They released one 12” mini-album (uploaded below) just a year after their formation, generating a bit of college buzz with their heavy, glam-infused brand of twisted, dark rock. The band toured for four years straight, playing with the likes of Human Drama, Ex-Voto, and various other players in the late eighties post-punk scene.

However, the original lineup of Screams for Tina split in 1990, but while various members departed, others quickly joined the ranks and the band soldiered on, attracting the attention of Cleopatra records, who released a full-length record in 1993. The band split once more in 1997, however, significant re-exposure and the continued friendship of members Warren Mansfield and Billy Budd led to a reformation of Screams For Tina in 2007. They are currently working on a full length record! In the interim, give a spin to the record that started it all, 1986’s Strobelight Funeral 12”. Fun fact: This particular record inspired Strobelight Records, home to Frank the Baptist, the reformed Pink Turns Blue, Black Ice, and The Last Days of Jesus, to name a few

Screams For Tina- Strobelight Funeral 12”
1. Nightmare
2. Fool’s Gold
3. Simple Addictions
4. Future Of Romance
5. Strobelight Funeral

The reformed Screams For Tina has a new website up, with t-shirts available for purchase. If you’re a fan of the shirt, nab one and support the band’s reactivation! Keep your eyes peeled for a new record in the works.

Fulfilling a quick request for another classic Sleep Chamber release. I have a donation post to follow tomorrow, but first, a quick blurb about this particular record:

I’ve already covered Sleep Chamber in a previous entry (though the link is still dead for this one- I still beg your patience, ladies and gentlemen), so peek over there for a few tidbits of info on the collective. Otherwise, I’ve uploaded Sleep Chamber’s 1986 Babylon 12” single for your listening pleasure. This particular release features vocals by both John Zewizz and one Mariea Foster. Otherwise, here’s the roll:

Winter Hours- Wait Till the Morning CD

Posted in 1980s, 1986, new jersey, paisley underground, post-punk, US, winter hours on November 10, 2008 by Frankie Teardrop

Spent last night uploading several back entries, mostly the Baroque Bordello material and all entries back to June. Will be working more on the rest as soon as possible. Please be patient!

Moving forward, here’s a bit of a seasonal treat for you kids today, one of my very favorite autumnal records by New Jersey based post-punk/paisely underground act Winter Hours. A little deviation from the usual doom & gloom/electronic aesthetic, Winter Hours’ sound was far more delicate, melodic, and guitar-based, drawing more comparisons to R.E.M., who supported the band in their earlier days. Other sonic textures include bands like The Lucy Show, Mighty Lemon Drops, The Church, and of course The Byrds and similar 60s folk bands who inspired the C86 movement.

Otherwise, the five piece act earned a devout cult following throughout their tenure, releasing a handful of LPs and EPs over the course of the 1980s. The band split officially in 1991, though their last single was released in 1989. As for the record at hand, Wait Till the Morning was originally an EP for the band in 1986, but this CD reissue includes the equally excellent Churches 12” as an appendix.

Winter Hours- Wait Till the Morning Comes CD
1. Hyacinth Girl
2. Wait Till the Morning
3. Simple John
4. Island of Jewels
5. Incendiary
6. Churches
7. Walk Away
8. At A Turtle’s Pace
9. I Want
10. All Along the Watchtower (Bob Dylan cover)

Guitarist Michael Carlucci has written a letter in tandem with the passing of singer Joseph Marques Rodriguez, which appears on a brief Winter Hours tribute page (linked below). He also has created a semi-official myspace page to celebrate the band’s legacy. Please direct your attention below:

Blue In Heaven- Explicit Material LP

Apologies again for the delay, ladies and gentlemen. My internet was out for the majority of last week, and was finally restored after the 4th.

On that note, I’m tackling a few quick requests this week. First up is the second Blue In Heaven LP, 1986’s Explicit Material. There are several rips of this record floating around online, but all are either incomplete or terrible quality, so I zipped this one up straight from my own shelves. Here’s the relevant info:

2. Tell Me
3. Just Another Day

In case you missed it, click here for the band’s first record. Otherwise, I’m desperately seeking the band’s final EP, entitled Rock ‘n’ Roll R.I.P.. If anyone has it, please drop a note and point me in the proper direction. I’m also in possession of one of the band’s early singles, but am missing all other singles/b-sides aside from the Across My Heart 12”. Holler if you’ve got them. Otherwise, happy Monday!

The Neon Judgement- Mafu Cage LP

Posted in 1980s, 1986, 1990s, 2000s, Belgian, industrial, synth, the neon judgement on May 12, 2008 by Frankie Teardrop

I’ve already done a brief overlook on the Neon Judgement, a Belgian based wave act, but since their seminal 1986 record Mafu Cage seems to be out of print, I’ve uploaded it for your listening pleasure. Otherwise, I’ll cut and paste what I said about them last October:

The Neon Judgement formed in a town outside of Brussels in 1981, and since then the duo of TB Frank and Dirk Da Davo have been creating synth driven music with a dash of electronic violence and a sprinkle of rock and roll ideology. Neon Judgement would release several records and remixes before briefly disbanding in 1998. However, as the two reunited in 2004 to promote an upcoming remix collection in Europe, the band was also reactivated as a creative unit. In 2005, the band also released The Box, a 2cd set comprising live tracks and rarities alongside classic cuts.

On the side, member Dirk Da Davo also spearheads the Neon Electronics side project, composing new material and reworking old tracks.

Twilight Ritual- Rituals LP

Posted in 1980s, 1986, 1990s, 2000s, autumn, Belgian, linear movement, minimal, minimal synth, twilight ritual on May 5, 2008 by Frankie Teardrop

To complete the trifecta and fulfill an older request, here’s a reissue of Twilight Ritual’s Rituals LP, originally released in 1986. This is the “latest” project of Geert Coppens and Peter Bonne, also known for their work in Autumn and Linear Movement, two equally captivating Belgian wave outfits. The project originally formed in 1982 and has been an on again, off again focus for the pair.

Twilight Ritual seems to be active to this date. Micrart, responsible for the cataloging and reissuing of releases new and old, alludes to two new studio records, one of which is available as of last year and one of which is on the way. In the meanwhile, Geert Coppens keeps himself occupied with two side projects; Das Cabinett (not the same previously featured in these back pages) and Gerardus Le Monk.

Twilight Ritual- Rituals LP
1. Amorphous Materials
2. I Never Called You A Dream
3. Message
4. What Are Rooms For?
5. Strength For Me
6. He Is Ice
7. Means Of Heath
8. Closed Circuit
9. Tears On The Wall

Trash Groove Girls- Vol. 1 Arbeit, Sport & Spiel EP

Posted in 1980s, 1986, german, goth-rock, new wave, trash groove girls on April 28, 2008 by Frankie Teardrop

The Trash Groove Girls were a three piece gothic/new wave act who I believe hailed from Germany and were active in the mid 1980s. The lineup consisted of Katinka Päkel on vocals, Simone Stepputat on guitar, and Barbara Matzner on keyboards, all other instruments pre-programmed by the trio. The band released one full-length record, two singles, and one Mini-LP/EP, the latter which I’ve uploaded below.

I can’t come up with much else in the way of visuals and information, but their sound is incredibly catchy and danceable, with a bit of abrasive edge thrown in for good measure. Without any further ado, here’s the release information for their 1986EP release:

Trash Groove Girls- Vol 1. Arbeit, Sport, & Spiel EP
1. Trash Beat
2. Zero
3. Sugar Pink Go Go Baby
4. Gimme, Gimme
5. Arbeit, Sport + Spiel
6. Gimme (The Beat Part 1)

*download it here* (RE-RIPPED 10.6.2016)

I also have digital copies of the band’s two singles, but they’re ripped at a meager 128kpbs. Holler if you’re interested and I’ll zip them up and send them your way…
